As you know, we have started buying bread flour in bulk to bake our own bread at home. We have previously made them in our bread making, however this creates an upright style loaf. We have been watching videos on using Dutch ovens to bake bread in and were intrigued. We usually only use these to cook on the fire when camping but decided to give it a go.
My Husband used the bread maker to create the dough. This is a time saver and it is usually fail safe. We preheated the oven with the Dutch oven inside as high as our oven would allow (around 240 degrees Celsius) while the bread maker was developing the dough. The dough turned out a little wet so he kneaded in some extra flour. He then rolled it in sesame seeds, placed it in the hot and oiled Dutch oven with the lid on. The loaf took roughly 45 minutes to bake.
The best thing about baking bread at home is the smell that fills your house. By the time it was ready we were all hanging out to have a slice. A sharp bread knife is definitely a must.
My husband recently used one of our loaves to make a delicious cob loaf dip with bacon and sun-dried tomato. I’m looking forward to making another one with our homemade Labneh, herbs and veggies from our garden.
