Well Overdue

I didn’t realise how long it had been until since I had written an actual blog post so this one is definitely long overdue.Whilst we’ve been prepping and planning our latest garden plans we’ve been reminiscing about all the things we have achieved and learnt in the past year. We are so proud of what we’ve accomplished so far but still have so much left we want to learn/try. Today we sat down together and had a chat about what we would like to focus on in this growing season, what we want to learn or try in the future and things we would like to acquire.

This is what we came up with:

This Growing Season

  • Seed Saving – This is a big one for me. I want to save more seeds from our plants this year to become self sufficient for next years growing season.
  • Companion Planting – We have started this already this year but is something we really want to delve into further. Last year we had trouble with the white cabbage butterfly’s and aphids so hopefully this year will make an improvement.

Future Learning

  • Native edible and medicinal plants – As those of you who have been following our journey for a while know I am currently studying to become a Naturopath. I am loving learning about the different medicinal actions of plants and would love to learn more about native plants medicinally and culinary.
  • Cheese making – I’ve had a try at making mozzarella and labneh but I would really love to try making some hard cheeses.
  • Beekeeping – When we eventually end up on our own acreage/property Hubby would love to get bees. So this is something we would love to learn about ready for the future.

Things to Try

  • Sourdough starter/bread – This is something we have tried previously. However if you forget to feed it, it turns rancid (fancy that!). We would both love to try this again and make our own sourdough bread and pizza bases.
  • Meat Rabbits and Chickens – This is something that won’t happen until we get a property. Hubby would love to try breeding meat rabbits (I don’t know if I’m on board with this yet) and we both want to try breeding meat chickens as well as layers.

Purchases

  • Pressure Canner – over the last 12 months we have both had a try at preserving, making a variety of relishes, pickles and apple jelly. We would love to get a pressure canner so we can preserve excess vegetables from the garden for use during winter. We will also be able to preserve meals and soups for quick and healthy dinners.
  • Flour Mill – Hubby would love to get a flour mill to have fresh home milled flour for baking

Hopefully we can share some of these accomplishments with you all soon and further down the track.
